PILOTWINGS 64

How it was?

Wanna fly? Then you're going to need a Nintendo 64 and a copy of Pilotwings 64, one of two games available at the U.S. launch. With breathtaking 3-D graphics, and a great flight engine, this game really makes you feel like you've taken to the skies. Although the first Pilotwings for the SNES was great, this one is 100 times better. The analog stick is used so well in this game, it makes me wonder how I ever used the D-Pad for the original.

The game, like the first, is still essentially a test of your flying skills as you try to earn your Pilot's License and your way into bonus rounds. Your modes of flight include the hang glider, rocket pack, and gyrocopter. The first level is extremely easy, and this will allow you a chance to get used to the controls and to easily grab the Birdman suit after you complete the first 3 tasks (which include flying through rings, and shooting down targets). With the Birdman suit, their is no particular goal, yet I found it to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game. You get to fly around with no time restrictions and take pictures of the beautiful scenery (which you can look at later). And believe me, the scenery is beautiful. Especially the Mansion in one of the early levels. It is almost breathtakingly gorgeous (especially at night). And unlike Mario 64, there seems to be little pop-up in any of the scenery.

Although the graphics are great, this game is not as addicting as the other N64 launch game, Mario 64. After the first few tasks, you may find yourself becoming bored quickly as the game becomes rather monotonous. You will have to improve your skills as you move on, giving the game quite a bit of challenge to it. But the replay value just isn't that high. After you complete one of the tasks you may wish to never see it again, and this is a bad sign for this game.

Nonetheless, this game is still one of the best next generation games around. The graphics will blow your mind, and you will have enough fun completing this game the first time through to make it a good choice to buy. And you may want to pop it in later and just fly around in the Birdman suit as relaxing music plays in the background. It boils down to this: If you loved the first one -- no question get it. If you didn't -- rent it and judge for yourself. One thing is for certain, the graphics won't let you down.
